(CNN) - The Ecuadorian Government will allow the passage of Venezuelan citizens who have a visa to third countries through its territory. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Valencia, in an interview with the EFE Agency on Wednesday.

Valencia informed that Venezuelans may qualify for a “transit permit” available at the border crossings of Ecuador and which they will be able to access if they present the visa corresponding to the country of destination.

CNN contacted the Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, who indicated that the Foreign Ministry will inform the details of the new measure later.

This announcement comes after last August 26, the measure adopted by Ecuador to demand an exception visa for humanitarian reasons for the entry and permanence of Venezuelan citizens into the country entered into force. The procedure for obtaining this visa is available from August 21 and can only be initiated digitally through the website.

At the end of this year, UNHCR expects the number of Venezuelans in Ecuador to reach 500,000.
