(CNN) - Eddie Money, the singer and songwriter known for successes in the 1970s and "Baby Hold On" and "Take Me Home Tonight," died Friday morning after complications of esophageal cancer, his family announced. .

I was 70 years old.

“It is with great regret that we say goodbye to our beloved husband and father. It is very difficult to imagine our world without him, however, he will live forever through his music, ”says the statement of the Money family.

Money first announced his diagnosis of cancer last month in a clip for the second season of his reality TV show, "Real Money."

Eddie Money, the singer and songwriter known for the hits "Baby Hold On" and "Take Me Home Tonight," died on September 13 following complications of esophageal cancer.

"I thought he was just going to do a checkup and told me he had cancer," Money said in the video.

The singer was diagnosed last fall and said he wanted to be open about his battle.

“He is not honest, I want to be honest with everyone. I want people to know that cancer has advanced a lot and that not everyone dies of cancer as they did in the 50s and 60s, ”he said on the show.

“Will I live a long time? Who knows, it is in God's hands, ”Money continued. "But you know what? I will take every day I can. Every day on earth is a good day. ”

Born as Edward Joseph Mahoney in Brooklyn, New York, he briefly served as a member of the New York police before moving to California in 1968 to try his luck in the music business.

Money signed with Columbia Records in 1976, and his debut album, Eddie Money , was double platinum. It included the classic hit, "Two Tickets to Paradise."

During his four-decade career, Money sold almost 30 million records. He was on tour until this year, but had to cancel during the summer due to health complications.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie, and five children, Jessie, Dez, Joe, Julian and Zach.
