(CNN) - Experienced actress Felicity Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison for her role in what the authorities called the biggest university admission scam ever investigated.

Huffman also received a fine of US $ 30,000, 250 hours of community service and a year of supervised freedom, said federal court judge Indira Talwani in Boston today.

Felicity Huffman had said she would accept any punishment the court deemed appropriate.

Huffman, along with fellow actress Lori Loughlin, is one of the highest profile parents to be caught in the admissions scandal.

Huffman, star of the television series "Desperate Housewives", presented a letter to Judge Indira Talwani last week in which she tried to explain why she gave the brain of the scam $ 15,000 to increase the Your daughter's SAT test score.

"In my desperation to be a good mother, I convinced myself that all I was doing was giving my daughter a fair chance," Huffman said in the three-page letter. “I see the irony in that statement now because what I have done is the opposite of fairness. I have broken the law, cheated the educational community, betrayed my daughter and failed my family. ”

Huffman's letter adds another dimension to the sentencing decision that awaits Talwani.

Huffman pleaded guilty in May to pay $ 15,000 to a fake charity that facilitated the allegations when his daughter took the SAT tests.

The charity partnered with Rick Singer, who confessed to helping wealthy parents cheat on standardized tests for their children. Singer also bribed university coaches to falsely designate students as elite athletes, paving their way to admission, according to a criminal complaint.

Huffman and Singer exchanged emails on how to give their daughter extra time to take the SAT, the complaint says, and arranged for the girl to take the exam in a place controlled by an administrator whom Singer had bribed.

Huffman's daughter received a SAT score of 1,420 out of 1,600 possible, approximately 400 points more than her preliminary SAT test the previous year.

Huffman then discussed the scheme in a phone call recorded with Singer, the complaint says.

Huffman agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud in April. She was among the 13 parents who said they would plead guilty to the scam.
