(CNN Spanish) - A large fire broke out on Thursday night at the Badim Hospital, located in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro. One of the patients who was in serious condition died from smoke inhalation, as confirmed by the state agency Agencia Brasil Rede D'or, the hospital administration network to which this medical center belongs.

The fire originated in the oldest hospital building because of a short circuit in one of the underground generators, according to Agencia Brasil. The fire department evacuated the less serious patients first and then did so with those who were in a more delicate state, especially those who were in intensive care and could not be removed immediately.

In the streets next to the hospital, improvised stretchers were installed and the medical staff attended to the evacuated patients.

Fifteen ambulances from other nearby medical centers were sent to the site to help with the evacuation, explained the Secretary of Health of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
