(CNN) - An arrest warrant was issued for singer R. Kelly for failing to appear at a court hearing on Thursday, the Hennepin County Prosecutor's Office in Minnesota said.

Kelly, whose legal name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was expected in the Hennepin County District Court, spokesman Chuck Laszewski said.

At the two-minute hearing, Hennepin County Chief Prosecutor Judith Cole said no lawyer had approached his office or presented a certificate of representation for Kelly.

The singer faces two charges of prostitution with a person under 18 in Minnesota, authorities said.

An arrest warrant makes it mandatory for Kelly to appear in court next time.

Kelly is being held at the Federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on federal charges of sexual crimes. His initial trial date for those charges was set for April 27, 2020.

Singer's lawyer, Steve Greenberg, questioned his client not appearing in Minnesota and said on Twitter: “I didn't receive any notice of the legal proceedings, nor did he. I didn't avoid his assistance, nor him. ”

Greenberg added: “He is in custody. It is the prosecutor who must obtain a court order for #RKelly to appear, and it is the prosecutor who must go looking for him if, like here, he is in custody elsewhere. Don't just give him a direct federal custody pass. ”

The Illinois Attorney's Office told the Hennepin County Prosecutor's Office that it will not make Kelly available to the county until after his federal case is over, Cole said.

A criminal complaint details an incident that occurred in July 2001 after a minor asked the singer for an autograph at a promotional event.

Kelly gave the girl, then 17, her autograph and a phone number, the complaint says. When she called, she was directed to her hotel in Minneapolis and was greeted by someone she believed was a male member of her staff.

The complaint says that when he met Kelly, the two had a little talk before he gave her $ 200 for dancing for him. After settling for the amount, she agreed. He took her clothes and then his, and touched her sexually while she danced, the documents say.

He gave the victim VIP tickets for his concert, the complaint says. That allowed him to attend the concert for people over 18 without paying or showing his ID.

Kelly faces separate charges in Illinois and New York.

Scottie Andrew, Chris Boyette and Katherine Dillinger of CNN contributed to this report.
