[Sydney, 13th Reuters]-The Parliamentary Special Committee of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan and submitted a report to the government recommending establishment of diplomatic relations with China.
A copy of the report obtained by Reuters is recommended to establish a foreign diplomatic mission in the capital city of Honiara (Guadalcanal Island) by making a diplomatic relationship with China by making a diplomatic relationship with Taiwan.
“As a result of the study, it became clear that changing the diplomatic partner to China and normalizing diplomatic relations with China would greatly benefit the Solomon Islands.”
According to two people familiar with the matter, the content of the report was reviewed by the cabinet on the 13th. It has not yet been submitted to Congress.
Sogabare has repeatedly shown that he will not make a formal decision until he receives a report from the special committee.
According to one source, legislators who support maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan are expected to ask the government to make a decision after publishing a report and collecting opinions.
I contacted Taiwan's diplomatic office in the Solomon Islands, but there is no answer so far. At the moment, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not received any comments.
If Solomon Islands decides to diplomatically, 16 countries have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In the previous year, Central American El Salvador, Dominican Republic and West African Burkina Faso made a diplomatic relationship with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with China.
