(CNN Spanish) - The wave of forest fires in recent months has awakened the alert of Colombian authorities who now assumed a criminal investigation through
of the Cali Prosecutor's Office.
This was announced through a statement published on Friday, September 13. Official figures reflect alarming figures of more than 320 hectares destroyed due to fires, putting flora and fauna at risk.
The authors of these fires will be investigated with the crime of damage to natural resources authorities said. In the month of August more than 200 fires were treated and so far this year there are more than 500 fires according to the Fire Department. According to preliminary investigations, 90% percent of fires in Cali have been caused by humans.

Several countries in Latin America have been affected by forest fires in these months. Wildfires in the Amazon burn at a record pace in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, according to the National Space Research Institute, INPE. According to the Government of Santa Cruz, forest fires in Bolivia have consumed two million hectares, 900,000 of them, in protected areas.
Nearly half of the world's forests that existed when humans began farming have now left, and an additional 32 million acres are destroyed each year, according to the nonprofit Rainforest Alliance.
