Polling stations opened in Tunisia today to elect a new president.

According to Tunisian media, more than seven million Tunisian voters will cast their ballots at the polls to choose a president from among 24 candidates, most notably former Defense Minister Abdelkrim Zubaidi and Prime Minister Youssef Chahed.

In turn, the Tunisian Interior Ministry announced that some 70,000 national security personnel will be responsible for securing elections in all states.

The head of the Tunisian House of Representatives, Mohammed Nasser, who assumed the functions of the President temporarily after the death of former Tunisian President Beji Kaid Essebsi last July, called for early presidential elections on the 15th of September.
