The Solomon Islands, the Pacific island nation, decided to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan and establish diplomatic relations with China on the 16th. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) officially announced the severance between the two nights. Since the inauguration of President Tsai Yin Wen in 2016, it is the sixth country that has made ties with Taiwan, and 16 countries have maintained the relationship.
In Solomon, a special investigation team established by the Sogabare administration, which was established after the general election in April this year, is considering revising diplomatic relations. The report touched on infrastructure development under the “One Belt and One Road” concept of the Chinese government, and suggested that China change diplomatic relations before October 1st, when it celebrated its 70th anniversary.
On the other hand, in Taiwan, a presidential election aimed at re-election was held in January next year. The opposition side is expected to intensify criticism of Mr. Tatsumi following this disconnection. The Chinese side also seems to have an aim to shake Taiwan's public opinion by cutting Taiwan's diplomatic relations.
