(CNN) - Saudi and US researchers determined "with very high probability" that the weekend's attack on the Saudi oil industry was launched from a base in Iran near the border with Iraq, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The attack involved cruise missiles, along with drones, flying at low altitude, the source said, and its trajectory was from the north of the Abqaiq oil plant, which was hit by more than a dozen projectiles in the early hours of Saturday in the morning.

The missiles, according to the current evaluation of the investigators, flew over southern Iraq and crossed the Kuwaiti airspace before reaching their objectives. Kuwait announced Monday that it had launched an investigation into reports of drone or missile sightings shortly before Saudi targets were reached.

The Pentagon declined to comment and Iran has not yet responded to CNN's request.

The CNN source said the missiles would have avoided traveling over the Persian Gulf, where radar systems in the United States and Saudi Arabia are strongest. The kingdom's air defense systems focus on the Gulf.
