(CNN) - Hurricane Humberto continues to strengthen and grow as it moves away Tuesday from the United States.

With wind speeds of 160 km / h, and gusts of up to 193 km / h, the category 2 cyclone could become a major hurricane before dangerously approaching Bermuda on Wednesday night.

"With its current route and cone, there is the possibility of a significant impact on Bermuda," said CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The concern is not a direct impact, although it is still a possibility, but now it is more likely that the island will experience conditions close to the hurricane because the wind field has expanded.

The hurricane will pass less than 160 km north of the island's territory, according to the current forecast of the National Hurricane Center, which said Tuesday at 11 am ET that predicted that "the models are in excellent agreement."

Hurricane winds (more than 119 km / h) extend outward to 96 km from the center of the storm. Then, any slight movement of Humberto could put Bermuda on the most intense side of the storm.

Tropical storm warning in Bermuda

Whatever the route, winds with tropical storm force (at least 62 km / h) will extend to the island, possibly arriving as early as 8 am ET on Wednesday.

The Bermuda Meteorological Service has issued a tropical storm warning and hurricane watch. Such a warning is issued when tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area, usually within the following 36 hours; Hurricane monitoring means that hurricane conditions are possible in the surveillance area within 36 hours.

Only 21 hurricanes have passed within 160 km of Bermuda in the last 100 years.

The last hurricane that touched down in Bermuda was Hurricane Gonzalo in 2014.
