In a memo sent to the cabin crew, the national airline of India told staff that it would launch a new menu for the flight crew, providing the staff with a "low-fat dietary meal."

"Given the crew's health factor, the operations director has taken an initiative to review the crew's flight menu," said the memo sent to CNN by an Air India spokesman.

“In view of the above, a special low-fat diet has been prepared for the day-to-day crew in order to provide a light and healthy meal with a homey (Indian) touch,” said the document, sent by the senior manager Dressage Tshering

The new menu includes dishes such as bhurji green peas, egg white omelette with mushrooms and various kebabs, and has been introduced on flights departing from Delhi and Mumbai starting September 15.

“We are presenting special healthy meals for the entire crew. The new menu is also profitable, ”said Dhananjay Kumar, spokesman for Air India, in a statement to CNN.

This is not the first time that Air India has been involved in the weight debate.

In 2015, the airline asked 125 of its flight attendants to lose weight or, instead, be offered a job at the airport or "land duties."

At that time, the airline insisted that the decision was not about weight, but provided an opportunity for staff to return to the required “fitness level”, adding that the decision came as a result of a “problem of security".
