[Reuters, Strasbourg 17]-At the plenary session on the 17th, the European Parliament approved the appointment of Mr. Christine Lagarde as the next President of the European Central Bank (ECB) with 394 in favor, 206 against and 49 with abstention. The path to the birth of the first female governor was opened.

Mr. Lagarde became the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the French Minister of Economy and Finance. In the IMF era, he showed his skill in negotiating, but has little experience in monetary policy management.

It will be officially appointed at the EU Summit in mid-October and will take over as the successor to Draghi from November 1st.

The European Parliament also approved a number of proposals in favor of the appointment of Mr. Eve Mersch, currently managing director of the ECB, as vice chairman of the ECB's Banking Supervisory Committee.
