Greta Thunberg awarded the most important Amnesty Prize

She is already a trailblazer for climate protection - now Greta Thunberg can also call herself an ambassador of conscience. She received the corresponding prize from Amnesty International in the USA.

For many (not only) young people, Greta Thunberg is a role model in her fight for the climate. The Swedish activist and the protest movement Fridays For Future have now received the most important award from Amnesty International in Washington.

The award is for "all the fearless youths who are fighting for their future," said the 16-year-old on Monday (local time) at the awards ceremony.

Thunberg has protested for more than a year for more climate protection. Their weekly school strike has turned into an international climate protest movement with hundreds of thousands of supporters.

For many people, the connection between climate change and migration, hunger and the violation of human rights is still not clear, said Thunberg. She called to action: "People are dying, and yet so many of us are still looking away."

"Young people are often told that they are the leaders of tomorrow," said Amnesty General Secretary Kumi Naidoo. He was glad that Thunberg and the many other young activists had not heard. "If they wait until tomorrow, there will be no future for any of us." US Secretary of Amnesty Margaret Huang praised the "perseverance" of the movement.

This is no longer a girl's fight in Sweden. The future of our planet depends on these young people, acting on their conscience. @GretaThunberg & the #FridaysForFuture movement are our #AmbassadorOfConscience 2019. Today we're hosting award events all around the world pic.twitter.com/dr3taZouF3

First the trip by boat, then the demo in front of the White House

With the so-called Ambassador of Conscience Award, Amnesty honors artists and other personalities who stand up for the defense of human rights. The prize has been awarded since 2003. Awards went to Czech civil rights activist Vaclav Havel and Pakistani child rights activist Malala Yousafzai.

16-year-old Thunberg has carried her protest around the world and arrived in the US just over two weeks ago. Her journey was as environmentally friendly as it was suitable for the media on a high seas yacht.

Last Friday, she demanded more climate protection from the White House with hundreds of children and adolescents. A meeting with US President Donald Trump, who does not necessarily excel as a climate fighter, the Swede had been excluded in advance. On Friday she wants to participate in the global climate strike of the movement Fridays For Future in New York.
