On the morning of the 17th near Hong Hung Station in Hong Kong and Kowloon Peninsula, a running train (12-car train) derailed. At least eight people were injured, five of whom were taken to hospital. The train was derailed with the couplers connecting the vehicles disconnected, and stopped in a way that crossed the track. According to the Consulate General of Japan in Hong Kong, there is no information that Japanese were injured.
According to the Hong Kong government, one crack was found on the track near the accident site. A senior government official at the press conference was asked about the connection with the protests and said, "Do not exclude all possibilities, investigate thoroughly."
