Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunga Megatovic condemned the violations of the Turkish regime against opponents of its policies, explaining that repression prevails in Turkey under the regime.
"Interim detention is a means of punishment in Turkey," Megatovic said in an intervention today during the European Court of Human Rights's consideration of the case of former President of the People's Democratic Party Salahuddin Demirtaş. ”.
For his part, a lawyer for Demirtas, Ramadan Demir said that a Turkish court had ordered the beginning of September the temporary release of his client as part of his main trial, but "it is not yet clear" the date of his release from the prison of Edirne in northwestern Turkey.
The 17 judges of the Supreme Court of the European Court of Human Rights will make their decision on the case in the coming months, noting that the trial of Demirtaş in Turkey begins on the seventh of January next.
Demirtas was sentenced on December 4, 2018 to four years and eight months in prison for “propaganda by terrorism”.
On November 20, the European Court convicted the Turkish regime and called on him to end the detention of Demirtas.
