A Hessian supporter of the "Islamic State" (IS) has been given a high prison sentence. The fifth Criminal Senate of the Higher Regional Court (OLG) Frankfurt am Main pleaded guilty to 32-year-old Walid D. because he had been ready to fight for IS in Syria. He was convicted for supporting the jihadist militia.
D. decided in fall 2013 to join the IS in Syria as a fighter. From Kassel he traveled to Reyhanli on the Turkish-Syrian border. From there he was taken by traffickers to a so-called Safehouse of the IS, where newcomers were checked by the militia for reliability.
At the end of November 2013, he was allowed to call his family in Kassel. In the process, D. learned that his father had died a few days earlier. He asked to leave Safehouse to return to Kassel. On December 2, D. flew from Istanbul to Frankfurt am Main.
The behavior of the accused was a support of the IS, the Senate ruled. The fact that D. was in readiness at the militia was objectively useful to the association.
D. is already convicted. In 2015, he was sentenced by the district court of Kassel for unauthorized possession of narcotics and weapon offenses to a term of imprisonment of one year and six months.
