(CNN Spanish) - In the midst of great expectation, the National Assembly of Ecuador failed on Tuesday to obtain the necessary votes for the approval of one of the reforms to the Criminal Code that proposed the decriminalization of abortion in case of rape.

In the plenary session 65 votes were registered in favor and at least 70 were needed so that women are not penalized by justice if they decide to abort for being victims of rape.

The decision of the Assembly was considered "unfortunate and harmful" by the groups that believe that a woman should have the freedom to decide on her body if she becomes pregnant with her rapist. They ensure that more girls will continue to be forced mothers.

On the other hand, religious groups and conservatives celebrated the decision because they insist that "save both lives"; that is, to defend life from conception and promote tougher sanctions against sex offenders. Earlier, representatives of the Catholic Church warned with legal action if abortion was approved in case of rape.

Outside the National Assembly in Quito, dozens of women were concentrated with banners and banners for and against non-punishable abortion in situations of sexual assault that remained pending the vote.

On the other hand, within these same reforms to the Ecuadorian Criminal Code, the Assembly approved with 83 votes in favor the planting or cultivation of cannabis for therapeutic purposes.
