The number of Korean tourists who visited Japan in August was 308,700, down 48.0% from the same month last year. The Japan Tourism Agency announced on the 18th. The decline was for the second consecutive month, and the rate of decline expanded rapidly from 7.6% in July. While there are no signs of the resolution of the conflict between Japan and South Korea, it appears that the movement to refrain from visiting Japan has spread rapidly in Korea.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, visitors from South Korea have been on a downtrend since the second half of last year due to the diversification of travel destinations, such as the popularity of travel to Vietnam, and the slump in the Korean economy.
Furthermore, on July 4th, the move to refrain from visiting Japan in South Korea was triggered by the fact that the Japanese government launched a tightening of export restrictions on three semiconductor-related items. Some airlines were also moving to reduce passenger flights to Japan.
Due to the decline in Korean tourists, the total number of visitors to Japan in August decreased by 2.2% from the same month of the previous year to 252,100. It decreased for the first time in 11 months since September last year when it was down 5.3% due to the typhoon damage at Kansai Airport and the earthquake in Hokkaido.
