[Reuters, Washington 17]-Pence US Vice President was scheduled to meet with Sogabare Prime Minister of Solomon Islands after the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan and decided to diplomatic relations with China Canceled. A US government official revealed to Reuters on the 17th, subject to anonymity.
According to the senior official, the meeting was requested by Prime Minister Sogabare in July and was scheduled to be held in Washington this month in conjunction with the UN General Assembly in New York this month.
“The decision of the Solomon Islands to change its diplomacy from Taiwan to China comes with consequences. Their decision has historically damaged their strong relationship with the US,” he said. "We prioritized immediate interests with China over active engagement."
In July, Sogabare called Vice President Pence and sent a letter, stating his desire to request the Cabinet to postpone the decision on relations with Taiwan.
According to a copy of the letter that Reuters obtained, the Prime Minister said that assistance from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Taiwan was needed for infrastructure development, a key domestic issue.
