(CNN Spanish) - The 5-year-old Hispanic girl Dulce María Alavez was reported missing this Monday afternoon after allegedly being kidnapped while playing in a playground in New Jersey.

Dulce's case adds to the more than 85,000 active cases of missing persons, according to the FBI's Archive of Missing Persons of the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC).

Young people under 18 years of age accounted for 34.8% of cases by December 2018, with 29,758 missing.

The disappearances of children may be due to the fact that they escaped from their homes, were abducted by relatives, lost or "left", or were kidnapped by people outside the family.

Technological advances, communication through public alerts and greater cooperation from the authorities have helped some cases be resolved more quickly.

Amber Alerts (acronym for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) are emergency messages released when police determine that a child was abducted and is in imminent danger. They include information about the infant and its kidnapper, physical descriptions and data about the vehicle, which could lead to finding the child.

Like Dulce, 67% of children reported missing in the United States in 2018 belonged to an ethnic minority, according to a report by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Here we present the data of missing infants reported in AMBER Alert last year in the US, by sex and race.
