Kuala Lumpur-Sana
Authorities in Malaysia and Indonesia have closed thousands of schools today due to heavy smoke from wildfires on some Indonesian islands several days ago.
The Malaysian authorities have ordered the closure of some 2,500 schools for health reasons, including nearly 300 schools in the capital Kuala Lumpur, which is covered by poisonous smoke caused by uncontrolled fires on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
The Indonesian authorities have also closed hundreds of schools in Riau province, as well as more than 2,000 schools in other parts of the country.
Fires have broken out in Indonesia for several days, but this year has seen the worst fires since 2015 and has heightened global fears of forest fires across the world as they exacerbate global warming.
