(CNN Spanish) - Former Miami mayor Maurice Ferré died, current mayor Francis Suárez confirmed to CNN.
Ferré, of Puerto Rican origin, died Thursday at age 84 in Miami. He served as mayor of Miami from 1973 to 1985.
Earlier the current mayor of Miami expressed his condolences through his official Twitter account.
The official Twitter account of the City of Miami also posted a message lamenting the death of Ferré who, as indicated by the same tweet, was considered the father of the city of Miami in the modern era.
It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our dear friend, former @CityofMiami Mayor Maurice Ferré. He was a man of elegance, class, and grace who has inspired me to carry on his legacy of elevating #Miami as a diverse world-class city. He will be greatly missed.
