After having made their asylum application, both were sent to the city of Matamoros, Mexico, while waiting for the response. But the mother would have lost her patience for which she decided to cross the Rio Grande, as detailed by the vice chancellor of consular and migratory affairs, Nelly Jerez.

Their bodies were found on the morning of September 11 after an intense helicopter search. Members of the Marine Border Patrol found the bodies and alerted local authorities, the Border Patrol said in a statement.

Elmer Córdova, husband of Yamileth Herrera and father of little Gael, cried disconsolately at the Honduran consulate in Atlanta upon knowing the details of the death of his relatives. He says that the last time he spoke with his wife, she informed him of his concern and the fear he had of drowning in the river.

In his broken voice, Córdova also recalled his last conversation with his son Gael. The now widower told Univision, a CNN affiliate, that they paid about $ 8,000 to cross into the United States illegally.
