(CNN Spanish) - Tropical storm Lorena strengthened on Wednesday until it was a category 1 hurricane, according to the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC).

According to the latest NHC report, Hurricane Lorena is located on the southwest Pacific coast in Mexico, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Manzanillo, state of Colima.

  • 6 storms loom over the Americas

Lorena carries sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour) and advances at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour (12 miles per hour).

The report indicates that a hurricane warning is in effect from Punta San Telmo, Michoacán state, to Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco.

In addition, a tropical storm warning from Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita, Nayarit follows.

Meanwhile, the National Water Commission of Mexico (Conagua) of the National Meteorological Service (SMN) said that Hurricane Lorena generates dense clouds with torrential point rains, gusts of wind exceeding 70 kilometers per hour and high waves of 3 to 5 meters on the west and south coasts of the country.

In addition, he said, rainfall could result in landslides, increased river and stream flows and floods in low-lying areas of those regions.

Earlier, the University of Guadalajara announced the suspension of activities at its campuses located on the southern and northern coasts of the state of Jalisco, which will resume until further notice, due to an alert issued by the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Fire Protection Unit before the arrival of Lorena.

Tropical storm Mario, in the distance

Also in the Pacific is tropical storm Mario, although far from the coast of Mexico.

Mario is forecast to become a hurricane later this Thursday, but it is not expected to have much impact on land in the coming days.
