The Italian Prime Minister Conte, who launched the new coalition this month, met with French President Macron on May 18 and showed a stance to shift to a policy of allowing migrants and refugees to land across the Mediterranean.
At the press conference after the meeting, Mr. Konte revealed the policy of cooperating with European countries such as France to promote refugee screening and distribution to recipient countries. Since the previous administration looked hostile to NGOs that were rescued at sea and carried to Italy, the number of migrants and refugees landing in the country dropped dramatically.
The Conte administration entered its second term in the form of removing the right-wing party that set out its immigration policy, and turned to a cooperative route with the European Union. It has softened its attitude, such as allowing NGO rescue ships to enter the port over immigration.
