The theme of the day: GroKo resolves measures against climate change

2019, the year of climate change. This crisis, perhaps the crucial issue of our time, is not very recent, it has been developing for a long time. But never has the topic received so much political attention, never has it moved so many people. Because: 2019, this is also the year of the climate protests.

And within this year, September 20 will be remembered as a very special day. For one thing, because the demonstrations have reached a new dimension. Millions of people worldwide took to the streets. Also in Berlin there were protests (here it goes to the video).

In addition, September 20 was practically proclaimed the German Climate Rescue Day. Politically, too, something has changed this Friday: After about 19 hours of negotiations, the grand coalition in Berlin has agreed on a climate protection package with around 70 individual measures. The Union and the SPD want to ensure that Germany reaches the climate targets for 2030. The opposition has criticized the agreement quickly and sharply, Chancellor Angela Merkel defends it.

The analyzes of the climate protection package:

  • The economic analysis: More packages as a package
  • The scientific analysis: Good night
  • The political short analysis in the video: "GroKo is not capable of big litter"

Of course, the debate goes far beyond Germany. Two key factors in the fight against climate change are in Asia: India is currently turning from a climate offender into a great pioneer - and it is placing the rich West in charge of the costs. The environmental expert Barbara Finamore explains in an interview why China is so important.

The number of the day: 2,900,000,000

Climate change has had a long-lasting effect - including on the animal world. A big problem here is the species extinction. A study has dealt with the bird world in North America. According to two Cornell University researchers in New York State, 2.9 billion fewer birds live in the US and Canada today than they did 50 years ago, a decline of 29 percent. One possible cause: the dwindling habitat of animals - rising temperatures could exacerbate the problem.
