WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday she strongly opposed any military action against Iran under the pretext of attacks on Saudi Aramco oil facilities or in support of the Saudi regime.
In a statement to US National Public Radio, Pelosi strongly criticized regime officials, especially Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for his past crimes and for brutally murdering Saudi opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi at his country's consulate in Istanbul.
"The US government is sitting in front of someone who cut off a journalist and dissolved his remains with chemicals," Pelosi said. "I don't think we have a responsibility to protect and defend Saudi officials."
The UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions Agnes Kalamar described in a report based on a six-month investigation the killing of Khashoggi as an "international crime", declaring that evidence regarding the case of Khashoggi's murder inside his country's consulate in Istanbul in October last year pointed to the responsibility of the Crown Prince of the regime. Mohammed bin Salman for the crime, explaining that he should be investigated and other senior Saudi officials in this crime.
Pelosi ruled out US President Donald Trump's military strike against Iran because he knew there was opposition in the United States to such a war.
