Jordanian public school teachers continued their strike for the third week in a row on Tuesday, as the government insisted on rejecting their demands for a 50 percent bonus on their basic salaries.
"The strike continues until the demands of the teachers are fulfilled and there is no retreat from any teacher or the union council which represents more than 100,000 teachers in Jordan," Noureddine Nadim, spokesman for the teachers' union, told reporters.
He added that this is an issue of rights that has been due for five years and can only be reversed if the government responds to these demands.
The Council of Teachers Syndicate decided on September 7 to announce an open strike that ends with a 50 percent bonus.
The Ministry of Education insists on refusing to respond to the demands of teachers, arguing that the cost of the allowance is more than $ 150 million on the state treasury.
Jordan is witnessing a rise in prices and a worsening economic crisis with a public debt of nearly $ 40 billion.
