(CNN) - A man from Louisiana, United States, drowned after proposing marriage to his girlfriend while on vacation in Tanzania.
Steven Weber and Kenesha Antoine were staying on the island of Pemba, reports WBRZ, a CNN affiliate, in a log cabin with a bedroom submerged beneath the surface of the ocean on the east coast of Africa.
Weber made the nuptial proposal this Thursday swimming underwater and holding a handwritten note against the windows of the room, according to a video that Antoine posted on Facebook on Friday, before presenting a ring.

The note, which Weber had placed inside a transparent plastic bag, said: “I can't hold my breath enough to tell you everything I love about you. BUT… I love everything I love about you EVERY DAY! ”
"Could you be my WIFE?" The note continued. "Marry me???"
But Weber could not return to the surface, Antoine said in a subsequent Facebook post. “You never got out of those depths, so you never heard my answer, 'Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you! ”She wrote. "We could never hug and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, since the best day of our lives became the worst, the cruelest turn of imaginable destiny," Antoine continued. "And we will try to comfort ourselves with the fact that we enjoy the most incredible experiences on the wish list in recent days, and that we were both so happy and absolutely stunned by the excitement in our last moments together."

The Manta Resort, where the couple was staying, issued a statement on Saturday confirming the death.
"Our most sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, family and friends affected by this tragic accident," said Matthew Saus, the resort's executive director.
Local authorities were investigating the fact, he added.
The State Department confirmed that an American tourist had died in Tanzania, but gave no further details.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family for their loss. We are ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance, ”said the State Department.
