The world's first passenger elevator tripped over. Introduced at Howout Department Store in New York in 1857, but was not accepted by customers and closed in just three years. This elevator was driven by a steam engine installed in the basement of a five-story building, but the speed was very slow, about 12 meters per minute (currently the world's fastest elevator).
