DAMASCUS, (SANA) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Walid al-Moallem on Monday received the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Syria Gir Pederson and his accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, they discussed the remaining issues related to the formation of the Constitutional Committee and the mechanisms and procedures of its work to ensure its role in accordance with clear and agreed upon procedures in advance and away from any external interference.

The meeting was positive and constructive, and views were unanimous in affirming that only the Syrian people have the right to lead the constitutional process and that the Syrians should determine their own future without any external interference or pressure to ensure the desired progress in the political process to restore security and stability to all regions. In the Syrian Arab Republic, in addition to stressing the need to fully respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria and to reject terrorism in all its forms.

Minister al-Moallem reaffirmed Syria's commitment to the political process and reiterated its readiness to continue cooperation with the Special Envoy for the success of his mission by facilitating the Syrian-Syrian dialogue to reach a political solution led and owned by Syria in parallel with the exercise of its legitimate and legal right to continue to fight terrorism in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and all relevant Security Council resolutions. For his part, Pederson gave a presentation on the results of his meetings held in the last period, praising the progress in the political process and stressed his readiness to make the necessary efforts to contribute to facilitate the Syrian-Syrian dialogue and achieve the desired results.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, Assistant Minister Dr. Ayman Susan and Director of the Private Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Mohammad Al-Amrani.
