New York-Sana

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced today that an agreement has been reached on forming a constitutional discussion committee, praising the Syrian government's efforts to reach this agreement.

Guterres made the announcement in a statement to reporters on the sidelines of the 74th UN climate summit following talks between Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and UN envoy to Syria Gir Pederson in Damascus this morning.

The Secretary-General noted the efforts exerted by the Syrian government with the UN Special Envoy to Syria to reach the formation of the committee, explaining that it will hold its meetings in the coming weeks and that the United Nations will facilitate its work in Geneva.

Guterres noted that the formation of the committee, which the Syrians themselves organize and lead, could mark the beginning of a political path towards a solution to the crisis in line with UN Resolution 2254, which is based on a strong commitment to Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

Al-Moallem discussed during his meeting with Pederson today the remaining issues related to the formation of the Committee and the mechanisms and procedures of its work in order to ensure its role in accordance with clear procedures and agreed in advance and away from any external interference.
