WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Activists have closed key hubs in Washington, formed a human chain and linked themselves to a sailboat as they pressed US politicians to fight climate change.
Reuters reported that US police arrested 26 activists, while Washington police spokeswoman Alina Gertz said the arrests were made because of road closures.
The militants targeted areas in Washington, DC, including Farragut Square, Columbus Circle and near Union Station and Volger Park on Capitol Hill.
The protest, dubbed "Close Washington," is backed by 24 groups, including the Extensions Republic, backed by hundreds of scientists and calling for peaceful civil disobedience, to press governments to curb carbon emissions and prevent a climate catastrophe.
Activists were seeking to draw the attention of the United Nations climate summit in New York, where more than 60 heads of state meet, including small countries.
Governments and companies are expected to make new pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
In April, Extensions Republic disrupted parts of London for more than 11 days, halting trains and distorting the front of energy giant Shell.
