Shortage of skilled workers: Berlin wants to pay educators focus supplement

2019-09-24T16:34:59.388Z

Berlin wants to use federal funds from the Good Kita Act to make the educator profession more attractive - especially in social hotspots. At schools, a similar measure is already taking effect.

Berlin wants to pay Kita educators in social hotspots from mid-2021 a supplement. It should amount to about 300 euros per month, as reported by Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD). The extra money should help to attract more people to the educator profession in times of shortage of skilled workers.

According to estimates of the authority could get from the approximately 30,000 kindergarten teachers about 4600 the allowance. She is said to be paid at least in the first two years with 25 million euros from the federal government. The money comes from the so-called "Good-Kita-law".

According to Scheeres, the exact criteria for the supplement are not yet clear. Generally, there are professionals in day-care centers, where many children from socially disadvantaged families and children with language deficits are cared for. So-called focal point bonuses have recently been given to teachers and educators in certain schools in Berlin.

All in all, the federal government will provide 5.5 billion euros to the federal states from 2019 to 2022 via the "Gute-Kita-Gesetz". Berlin accounts for 239 million euros. The Berlin Senate wants to finance more than a dozen projects in order to increase the Kita quality.
