At some point on Tuesday afternoon, House Democrats are likely to take steps to, or at least begin, the process of political trial against President Donald Trump.

(CNN) - The House Democrats announced that the process of political trial against President Donald Trump begins.

It is an important change in Pelosi's long-standing position that his bank would be making a great political mistake if they pressed for a dismissal process.

Remember Pelosi's answer about the political trial in March to The Washington Post :

“I am not in favor of political judgment. This is news. I'm going to give you some news now because I haven't told any press person before. But since you asked, and I've been thinking about this: the political trial is so divisive for the country that unless there is something so convincing, overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should follow that path, because it divides the country. And it just isn't worth it. ”

She has held on to that line of thought until the news last week that an informant complaint was filed in August regarding a communication between the president and a foreign leader.

Trump's subsequent claims that he spoke with the newly elected Ukrainian president about the totally unproven allegations of corruption regarding Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, have effectively ended the confrontation between House Democrats on whether Trump should be prosecuted or not. A number of moderate Democrats who have had swinging positions have appeared only in the last 24 hours to say they believe Trump must be prosecuted. And Pelosi, according to his previous quote, seems to have accepted that course as a probable reality.

But it is very important to keep in mind that the main reasons why Pelosi was delayed in pressing for the political trial for so long, because the public was not clearly behind this and because it would not be bipartisan, they have not changed a bit. Over the past five days.

In a survey after another conducted in recent weeks and months, a clear majority opposes Congress making a political trial against Trump. A recent survey by the University of Monmouth showed that 6 out of 10 people opposed investigating Trump. (That same survey showed that 7 out of 10 people who identify themselves as Democrats are in favor of prosecuting Trump.)

You can argue that this history of Ukraine has changed all that, that the public will now pass from a majority that opposes political judgment to a majority that is in favor. We'll see! I cannot prove otherwise, simply because no survey has been conducted on the issue of political judgment in the last 96 hours. But my strong assumption would be that, while these latest revelations of Ukraine could move some people from uncertainty about the political judgment to favor it, it will not radically change the dynamics.

And you just have to look at how far Congress Republicans are reacting to the evidence that the history of Ukraine will not make the idea of prosecuting Trump a bipartisan effort.

"It is unfortunate that the president of the House of Representatives Intelligence Commission (Adam) Schiff and Senator (Chuck) Schumer have chosen to politicize the issue," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Monday. , from the Senate hall. And Texas Senator John Cornyn said the following about the informant: "I am a little worried because apparently some of the initial reports came from someone who had no first-hand knowledge, and then broke out like a forest fire." On Tuesday, North Carolina Republican representative Mark Meadows went even one step further, praising Trump for his actions. "I think Biden's actions should be investigated," Meadows said. “I certainly applaud him for highlighting that. I think it's something that should be considered. It is very serious. ”

In summary: this effort of political judgment, and it is better that you think it is approaching, will not be bipartisan. And, at least at the beginning, it won't be something that most of the country thinks is the right thing. (It is worth noting: Accusing a president is rarely popular in polls.)

Pelosi, a realistic policy, probably understood that he has no choice but to begin the process of political trial against Trump, given the feeling of an increasing number of members of the Democratic House of Representatives.

But Pelosi is also a great political strategist. And as such, she knows that what she and her colleagues will probably start today not only does not have any guarantee of success, but also represents a great political commitment.
