(CNN in Spanish) - Across Latin America, corruption is the protagonist of the daily news: bribes to police, corruption at the government and electoral level, the great Odebrecht scandal that affected several countries in the region, among others. However, the 10th edition of the Global Corruption Barometer in Latin America and the Caribbean - with data obtained in the first quarter of 2019 (see here technical data sheet) -, from the NGO Transparency International, reveals for the first time a more everyday facet and little obvious of corruption: sexual extortion.

MIRA: 5 men arrested as alleged perpetrators of sexual abuse in Spain

"The results reveal that women are more likely to pay bribes for health services and public education, while men tend to pay bribes to the police, for basic services and identity documents," reveals the report, which estimates that one in five people experienced sexual extortion or know someone who went through this situation.

In Peru, specifically, a 2012 national survey conducted by Proética, the Transparency International chapter in Peru, noted that “citizens believe that women who pay bribes are usually asked for money or sexual favors in exchange for services public, while men are more likely to be asked for money or material goods. ”
