The theme of the day: debacle for Johnson

In his native city of New York, Boris Johnson suffered his great defeat. On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister learned that the UK Supreme Court held that Parliament's compulsory break in the midst of the hot Brexit phase was unlawful, and therefore abrogated it with immediate effect.

All eleven judges were unanimous in securing the debacle of Johnson. The compulsory break until 14 October prevented MEPs from "exercising their office" in an extreme way, said Lady Brenda Hale as the judge.

House Speaker John Bercow called Parliament for Wednesday. Johnson also became active quickly: he does not think he will resign, he clarified. Instead, the head of government pleaded for a new election. Read here an analysis of my colleague Jörg Schindler from London.

The number of the day: 1930

People in need of care have to pay more and more out of their own pocket for a home ground. Since October 2018, the national contribution has increased by more than 110 euros to nearly 1930 euros per month. This resulted in an evaluation of the "Nursing database" of the Association of Private Health Insurance.
