(CNN) - The show will not continue at the Metropolitan Opera for Plácido Domingo.

The opera star will not play her role as Macbeth in the production of the Giuseppe Verdi classic and will not participate in any event at the venue, which will end a professional relationship that began in 1968, according to statements shared with CNN.

"The Metropolitan Opera confirms that Plácido Domingo agreed to withdraw from all future presentations at the Met, effective immediately," said the statement of a Met spokesman. “Met and Mr. Domingo agree that he needed to resign. The Met has no further comments at this time. ”

The Sunday image was removed from the "Macbeth" page on the official Met Opera website at approximately 6 pm ET. "Macbeth" opened Wednesday with Sunday in the lead role.

It was scheduled to perform on September 25, October 28 and 1. It was also scheduled to perform four dates in November on "Madama Butterfly".

“While I strongly dispute the recent accusations about me and I am concerned about a climate in which people are condemned without due process, after reflecting, I believe that my appearance in this Macbeth production would distract the hard work of my colleagues both in the stage as behind the scenes, ”Domingo added in a statement. "As a result, I asked to retire and I thank the leadership of the Met for graciously granting my request."

He added: “I am happy that, at the age of 78, I was able to sing the wonderful lead role in the general rehearsal of 'Macbeth', which I consider my last performance on the Met stage. I am grateful to God and the public for what they have allowed me to achieve here at the Metropolitan Opera. ”

Domingo's decision comes as he faces multiple accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior, which he has questioned and said they were "plagued with inconsistencies."

In August, The Associated Press reported that nine women detailed alleged incidents of sexual harassment that took place over three decades from the late 1980s. In September, 11 more people filed complaints that included verbal harassment and handling.

CNN could not verify their stories.

"Because it is an ongoing investigation, we will not comment on specific details, but we strongly dispute the misleading image that the AP is trying to paint Mr. Domingo," Nancy Seltzer, a spokesman for Domingo, told CNN in a communicated in september.

Domingo, 78, is considered one of the best opera singers of all time. He has won 14 Grammy and Latin Grammy awards and performed with fellow tenors Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras as part of the Three Tenors.

He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera at age 27 and performed there for 51 consecutive years.

CNN's Marianne Garvey contributed to this report.
