(Expansion) - The National Institute of Geography and Statistics of Mexico (Inegi) reported that during the last year 33 million crimes were committed in the country, while the entities with the highest registered crime rate were Mexico City and the State of Mexico, in which around 40% of its population was the victim of a crime.

According to the National Survey of Victimization and Perception on Public Security (Envipe) 2018, the list of the 10 most insecure states is completed: Baja California, Sonora, Aguascalientes, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Jalisco, Tabasco and Puebla.

In Envipe 2017, these entities, except Tlaxcala, integrated the list of the 10 most dangerous states.

To adequately calculate the level of insecurity in each state, the Inegi measures the crimes recorded at a rate of 100,000 inhabitants.

In the last year, the crime victim rate per 100,000 inhabitants increased from 14,069 to 42,603 ​​in the country's capital; that is, 42% of the citizens of Mexico City suffered some illicit. Among the most frequent crimes are the sale and consumption of drugs and robberies.

Meanwhile, in the State of Mexico, the rate went from 46,705 crimes to 41,389, which represents that 41% of its inhabitants were victims of crime. The most recurring crimes in the state are street alcohol consumption, theft, drug use and sale, as well as frequent shooting.

Although the number of crimes fell from 36,578 to 33,836 per 100,000 inhabitants, Baja California is located in the third place in the most insecure states. Drug use, theft and sale of drugs are among the most committed crimes in that entity.

Located in the north of the country, Sonora is the fourth state with the highest number of illicit. In the last year it went from 31,184 to 31,853 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. Gang, sale and consumption of drugs and assaults are the most recurring crimes in that entity.

As the fifth most insecure entity is Aguascalientes, going from 33,876 to 31,618 in the crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants. In the state, the most committed illicit were alcohol consumption on public roads, assaults, consumption and sale of drugs, as well as gangs.

Morelos is the sixth state with the highest number of crimes. In 2018, 31,512 crimes were committed per 100,000 inhabitants; that is, 31% of its population was a victim of insecurity. The most committed crimes were homicides, frequent shooting, sale and consumption of drugs.

Tlaxcala is the seventh most insecure state. In the last 12 months, 31,512 crimes were committed per 100,000 inhabitants, that is, 31% of its population suffered from some wrongful act. Assaults, shots and gangs, among the most recurring crimes.

Jalisco is the eighth most insecure entity. In 2018, for every 100,000 inhabitants, 30,455 crimes were committed that represent that 30% of its population was a victim of insecurity. As in most states, the consumption and sale of drugs, assaults and gangs, are among the most frequent illicit.

The state where President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Tabasco is from, is located as the ninth most insecure entity in the country. During 2018, 30,308 crimes were committed per 100,000 inhabitants; On average, 30% of its population was a victim of insecurity.

Puebla is the tenth most insecure state. In 2018, 29% of its population suffered a crime. Theft, consumption and sale of drugs, among the most recurring violations of the law.

The most committed crimes

According to the Inegi, during 2018, it is estimated that 24.7 million Mexicans suffered some type of crime, that is, one in three households.
