It was one of the more exciting Brexit days - and meanwhile, that really means something: On Tuesday, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the Parliament's compulsory break imposed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson was unlawful. For the head of government this is a bitter defeat. The court also accuses the Prime Minister of abusing the Queen for his political purposes.

"The government accepts that she has lost the case"

Joanna Cherry gets the first urgent question of the session. She asks Geoffrey Cox, politician and lawyer for the Conservatives, in his opinion on Boris Johnson's decision to advise the Queen to suspend the parliament. Cox stresses that the government acted in the belief that the process was legal and constitutional. He points out how complicated the legal situation was. But Cox also says, "The government accepts that it has lost the case."

Bercow opens the meeting

"Welcome back to our workplace," says Unterhaussprecher Bercow to the entry. Approved heckling from the ranks of parliamentarians.

The schedule of the parliamentary session

Announced are five statements. Boris Johnson will speak fourth, his contribution is expected from about 15.30 clock. But the whole procedure can also be delayed. Even before the first speech urgent questions can be asked. Of these, 32 have already been announced, it is expected that House Speaker Bercow will only accept some of them.

And what happens to the Brexit?

As so often in the past three years, there is no answer for the time being. Johnson also said after the ruling that he wanted to pull the EU exit necessarily until 31 October. But: Earlier this month, the House of Commons passed a law designed to prevent a no-deal Brexit. It forces Johnson to apply for a three-month extension to the deadline of October 31, should there be no adopted exit agreement by 19 October.

After the court ruling on Tuesday, Johnson called for new elections. The session of Parliament will start soon, and then the other Brexit options should be discussed again hotly.

How is it going on in the lower house?

House speaker John Bercow reacted quickly on Tuesday. Already today he summoned Parliament. The deputies come together from 12.30 pm German time. It will be interesting to see how the parliamentarians react to the latest developments - and what Johnson has to say. Already on Tuesday, he announced that there could ultimately be a new forced break for the Parliament - albeit much shorter than the last five weeks scheduled.

What are the reactions?

Several politicians called on Johnson to resign. This included Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn. The Scottish National Party also demanded that the prime minister resign from office. But Johnson apparently does not want to comply with this wish. However, he flew early from New York back to London. In the United States, he participated in the UN General Assembly. And how do the media react? The verdict was "devastating for Johnson," writes the Guardian. Further international press reviews can be found here.
