According to police, an 87-year-old woman was accused of killing her disabled adult grandson, whom she was caring part-time.

(CNN) - An 87-year-old woman was accused of killing her disabled grandson, for fear that no one would take care of her after she died, according to police.

Bradenton police officers arrived at an apartment complex in Florida, around noon on Sunday, in response to reports that there was a deceased person. There they found the body of Joel Parks, 30, Captain Brian Thiers of the Bradenton Police Department told reporters.

Parks was a man with disabilities who lived in a group home during the week, and with his grandmother, Lillian Parks, on the weekend. Parks was found by his sister. His father had passed away and his mother was estranged from the family, Thiers said.

Authorities did not specify the nature of Parks' disabilities, but Thiers said he could not take care of himself.

While the police were at the scene, Lillian Parks made comments indicating that she herself caused an overdose to Joel, fearing her own health as a partial caregiver for her grandson, Thiers said.

“You never fully know what someone is thinking. In this case, I don't know if she was thinking about her grandson's well-being or if she thought about herself, ”said Thiers, according to the CNF affiliate WFLA station.

Lillian Parks is currently in protective custody until a doctor orders his release, and the charges against him are pending, Thiers said.

Lillian Parks' family did not respond to CNN's request for comments.

Police are waiting for a toxicology report to determine what was provided to Joel, WFLA reported.

Danielle Hackett and Dave Alsup of CNN contributed to this report.
