The Directorate of Agriculture Tartous estimated the production of the province of the olive crop by about one hundred and three thousand four hundred and twenty-nine tons and set the fifteenth of next month to start harvesting.
Eng. Mohamed Ghanem Abdel Latif, head of the fruit trees department at the Agriculture Directorate, told SANA that 20 percent of the olive fruit is allocated to the table while eighty percent is allocated for oil extraction.
Abdul Latif explained that the total area planted with olive trees is about 76 thousand hectares and the total olive trees is more than eleven million of which more than ten million are in the process of fruiting.
Abdul Latif pointed out that it is expected to open one hundred and sixty-five presses between the piston and centrifugal out of two hundred and twenty-seven presses in the province of Tartous.
