"Everything they do is talk." With these words, US President Trump has criticized the German Ukraine policy. In fact, since 2014 alone, 544 million euros have been spent on development cooperation alone.

Germany has supported Ukraine with 1.4 billion euros since the beginning of the crisis. According to information from the Federal Government, a total of 544 million euros has been spent on development cooperation alone since 2014. Added would be:

  • 110 million euros in humanitarian aid
  • a financial loan of 500 million
  • 25 million for stabilization measures such as conflict monitoring and rule of law, as well as
  • around 200 million euros paid to Ukraine via the EU.

According to the figures, according to new OECD figures, Germany is the third largest donor to Ukraine after the European Union and the USA.

In 2014, the Ukraine conflict began with the Russian annexation of the Crimea and the outbreak of fighting between pro-Russian separatists and government troops in the east of the country. Germany and France have since mediated between Russia and Ukraine.

Nevertheless, US President Donald Trump accused Chancellor Angela Merkel in the controversial telephone conversation with his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Selenskyj at the end of July that he was not doing anything for Ukraine. "When I talked to Angela Merkel, she talks about Ukraine, but she does not do anything," he said after the Wednesday's White House protocol of the phone call. "Germany does almost nothing for you, all they do is talk."

In those parts of the conversation that deal with the US-EU relationship with Ukraine, Selenskyj agreed with the US president. "Yes, you are absolutely right," to "actually a thousand percent," he said to Trump's allegations against Merkel and the Europeans.

The Federal Government did not want to publicly contradict Trump's criticism. "We do not comment on that," said a government spokesman on Wednesday.

Following talks with the Ukrainian president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Trump called on Germany and France to step up their support for Ukraine. "I think that other countries should help Ukraine much more than they do," he said. "You have to feel a bit guilty for not doing what you should do."
