Kentavia Blackful died after being hit by a lost bullet in Harvey, Illinois.

Chicago (CNN) - A girl was in front of a computer planning her 12th birthday party this week, when she was shot in the head by a lost bullet, according to officials in Harvey, Illinois.

Kentavia Blackful died the next day, on her birthday, her mother told WGN, a CNN affiliate.

“We are talking about a girl. I hadn't even really experienced life, ”his grandfather, Kenneth Donner, told WGN on Wednesday. "He was in a fun stage of his life."

CNN has contacted the Kentavia family to request comments.

Kentavia, a student with honors, who was president of her sixth grade class, was home Monday around 9 pm, when she was shot dead, according to WGN and officials at Harvey, a suburb south of Chicago.

His family was watching the Chicago Bears game while Kentavia worked on the computer, looking for t-shirt designs for his birthday party, relatives told WGN.

It was taken in critical condition to the Advocate Christ Medical Center. He died around 10:30 pm Tuesday, the Cook County coroner's office said.

Police did not have anyone in custody in the case until Wednesday night, WGN reported.

"As a police department, we are committed to paying full attention to this crime against our young resident," Harvey police chief Eddie Winters said in a press release before the girl died. "We are asking for the support of our residents."

"Our hearts are hurt by the news of this latest act of violence against innocent residents of the city of Harvey," said Mayor Christopher J. Clark in a statement Tuesday before Kentavia's death.

The family and those close to the girl threw balloons that could have been used for her birthday on Wednesday night, WGN said.

Kentavia attended Gwendolyn Brooks High School, where she was a tutor for her classmates, the station reported.
