(CNN) - The longest-running barber in the world, Anthony Mancinelli, from New York, died on September 19 at the age of 108, after 96 years of cutting his hair. The northern state resident never retired and found passion in his job, his son, Robert, told CNN. Mancinelli died from complications of jaw cancer.

Mancinelli, who came to the Guinness Book of Records in 2018 for being the longest practicing barber, emigrated to the United States at age 8, according to Guinness World Records.

Soon he began sweeping floors in a barbershop; Then, at age 12, he began cutting his hair to help support his family. He attended elementary school in Newburgh, but never graduated. His son said that "he simply loved his job."

Anthony Mancinelli held the record of the longest practicing barber in the world.

“Everyone loved him. It is known worldwide. ”

Mancinelli was healthy most of his life, his son said, until he was diagnosed with cancer in February this year. About six weeks before his death, Mancinelli did not feel well and needed to rest, although he had no plans to stop working. He was tired and weak, his son said, but he planned to return to work at some point.

When Mancinelli began cutting his hair, in 1923, he charged 25 cents for his services. Before his death, he worked at Fantastic Cuts in New Windsor, where he charged $ 19 for a haircut.

Jane Dinezza, the owner of Fantastic Cuts, said she is still processing her death.

"It's a legend," said Dinezza. “One of the television stations asked who would work in his chair now. I didn't think about it then, but could someone fill that chair? Do not".

Dinezza said he would like to leave that chair free as a monument to Mancinelli.

Mancinelli's wife died 15 years ago and her other son died 36 years ago, Robert Mancinelli said. The barber continued cutting his hair for his other relatives.

"I have to find a new barber now," said Robert, whose father has cut his hair for 82 years of his life.

Apart from his Guinness world record, Mancinelli was included in the Hall of Fame of the Barber Museum in Ohio a week before his death, his son said.

CNN's Taylor Romine contributed to this report.
