(CNN Spanish) - José José, a popular Mexican singer and actor, died at age 71 on Saturday, confirmed the Ministry of Culture of Mexico.

José José, stage name of José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz, was diagnosed in March 2017 with pancreatic cancer and since then, according to the same he disclosed in a video where he was considerably thinner, had undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments .

José José, a singing and acting career

Also known as 'The prince of the song', José José, was born on February 17, 1948, surrounded by artists: his father was an opera tenor and his mother, a concert pianist, two key pieces in the formation of the interpreter, who From an early age he combined the studio with the guitar, children's songs, the school choir and music festivals.

His talent also led him to dabble in television and in the cinema, where he starred in films such as Gavilan or dove, and Forgive me everything.

He sold more than 120 million records which made him one of the most successful Latin American singers in history.
