Election in Austria: ÖVP under former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz wins election

The Austrian government broke up on the "Ibiza scandal". Now 6.4 million Austrians were called to parliamentary elections. Ex-Chancellor Short triumphs, the former coalition partner FPÖ loses significantly.



The Austrians have elected a new National Council. After first projections, the ÖVP is the ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz front. The FPÖ loses about ten percentage points.

Kurz 'government was overthrown at the end of May after only 18 months because of the "Ibiza scandal" by the parliament. A video recorded secretly in Ibiza shows how Freedom Party politician Heinz-Christian Strache offered government jobs for election campaign assistance to a supposed Russian investor. Strache's party was a coalition partner and he himself was vice-chancellor. After the scandal he had to resign.
