New York-Sana
The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General to Syria, Ged Pederson, reiterated the need to respect Syria's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, stressing that there is no military solution to the crisis and that the Syrians will prepare the constitution.
Speaking at a Security Council session today on the situation in Syria, Pederson explained that a month from now, on the 30th of next month, the Constitutional Discussion Committee, led and owned by Syria, will begin its work in Geneva with the facilitation of the United Nations in accordance with Security Council resolution 2254 and can review the 2012 constitution and amend it or prepare New Constitution.
Pederson said that the agreement to form the committee is based on basic principles that should include respect for the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Syria and adherence to the Charter of the United Nations and Security Council resolutions, noting that the findings of the committee will be submitted to popular approval, considering that this process would contribute to a political solution to the crisis.
Pederson stressed that Syria's constitution belongs to its people alone, and that the role of the United Nations is merely facilitating the work of the constitutional discussion committee.
Pederson pointed out that the presence of terrorist organizations in Idlib threatens other areas in Syria, stressing at the same time the need to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees displaced by terrorism to their country.
