What is it and how is it celebrated?
Rosh Hashanah means "head of the year" in Hebrew. It is a time of reflection and regret.
It is known as the "day of judgment."
According to the Talmud, the world was created on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar.
The festival is celebrated on the first and second day of Tishrei, which generally corresponds to September or October in the Gregorian calendar.
The Rosh Hashana begins the High Holy Days or Ten days of penance, ending with Yom Kippur.
One of the most important rituals during Rosh Hashanah is the sound of the shofar or ram's horn. It is used as a call to repentance during the High Holy Days.
Getting a haircut and dressing new clothes is also traditional during the Rosh Hashanah.
During this time, the Jewish people attend the services of the synagogue and refrain from work.
Another popular practice is to eat apples dipped in honey, symbolizing the hope of a sweet year to come. In addition, challah bread is baked in round loaves instead of braided loaves. The bread is dipped in honey instead of salt.
Pomegranates are eaten during this holiday because the seeds symbolize the many commandments of the Torah that the Jews must keep.
Another popular ritual is to walk to a river or stream and recite special prayers of penance.
Later, believers throw bread crumbs into the river, to symbolically discard sins.
Challah bread is dipped in honey for celebrations.
